Well, it’s official. My hives are a bust. I opened the hives yesterday to see if they’d done any comb-building at all in the upper story (the super), and there was NOTHING.
I’m trying to assume that they are simply biding their time, waiting for the goldenrod to bloom, but I don’t see how they will be able to store enough honey in that one brief season to get them through the winter.
So, I’ve put out sugar water for the yellow hive. The brown/white hive I think I’ll let be, so I’ll have two methods to compare.
The really happy news is that I gathered figs from my neighbor’s tree (with their permission, of course), and they told me this was the best harvest they’ve ever had. I’m just willing to bet that all the good pollination my bees provided had something to do with their bumper crop.

Fran, sorry about your hive. I just finished watching a DVD about beekeeping beyond the beginning and learned a lot. Feeding bees sugar water in the winter might not be as good an idea as feeding them FONDANT! of all things. I learned to make it and will happily share. Maybe we can make it together.
Cute stuff about the chickens. I'd love to have a couple of sweet little biddies but I'm not sure the County or my neighbors would be happy about it.
Somebody else mentioned fondant, and I'd like to learn more about it. If we make it together, let's remember to take pictures and I'll share it here on the blog.
