Day #389 Bees Plan Ahead

Bees and squirrels plan ahead for winter, as evidenced by the heavy combs of honey and pollen, and the full caches of nuts and seeds (many of them taken from my bird feeder!)

But birds don’t have that luxury. Their existence, their very survival, is very much a day-to-day affair. Since we humans have wiped out so much of their natural habitat, their existence can be a chancy thing. That’s why I feed the birds. In return, they eat a lot of bugs as well as a lot of the seed, suet, and mealworms I provide. Summer is much more fun for me now, what with fewer mosquitoes – thank you, birds!

I’ve been feeding birds for many years, and I depend on Wild Birds Unlimited in Suwanee GA for my seed and supplies. A great store, with knowledgeable owners and employees, as well as a resident dog (Cheyenne—who was featured in my standalone mystery, A Slaying Song Tonight) and a resident cat (Sophie—who was feral, but who adapted to people quite well).

If you’ve read this blog for any length of time, you know I have a lousy camera, so I had to borrow a picture from a writer colleague of mine, Kate George, who posted this photo of a chickadee (and many other bird pictures as well) on her website on Halloween Day.

BEEattitude for Day # 389:
Blessed are those who help our feathered friends, for they shall be even more blessed with music.
